Ballast Water Treatment

Ballast Water Treatment

We take pride in our comprehensive water treatment process, which treats approximately 9 million barrels of water annually. Our plant processes a combination of storm ballast water from tankers, industrial wastewater generated from our operational activities, and storm runoff collected from various process areas throughout the terminal. Through a series of rigorous treatments, including settling tanks, Dissolved Air Flotation Units, air strippers, thermal oxidizers, and biological treatment tanks, we ensure that only safe and clean water is discharged into Port Valdez.

In addition to protecting the environment, our water treatment process also allows us to recover valuable resources. Each year, we collect approximately 75,000 barrels of recovered crude oil during the treatment process, which is then reintegrated into our system and prepared for loading onto tankers. This sustainable approach not only reduces waste but also enhances the overall efficiency of our operations. At VMT, we are committed to responsible stewardship of the natural surroundings and strive for excellence in every aspect of our water treatment efforts.
